Welcome to Elandsbaai
A small fishing village on the West Coast of South Africa β where the surf breaks, the fynbos blooms, and the people wave back.
About the Village
Elandsbaai (also spelled Elands Bay) is a village of about 1,500 people, tucked between the Atlantic Ocean and the Piketberg mountains. It's 220 km north of Cape Town β roughly a 2.5-hour drive up the R27, the West Coast road.
The village is best known for its left-hand point break β one of the most consistent and uncrowded surf spots in South Africa. But there's more to Elandsbaai than surfing: the West Coast National Park borders the village, the fynbos-covered hills are alive with birds and wildflowers in spring, and the beach stretches for miles in both directions.
What Makes It Special
π The Surf
The point break at Elandsbaai is a long, workable left that handles swells from 2ft to 8ft. It's uncrowded by Cape Town standards β on a good day, you might share the lineup with ten other surfers. The water is cold (wetsuits mandatory), but the waves are clean.
πΏ The Nature
Spring (AugustβOctober) brings wildflower season β the fynbos hills turn yellow, orange, and purple. Birders come for the endemic species. The lagoon at Verlorenvlei is a RAMSAR wetland, home to flamingos and pelicans.
π£ The Fishing
Rock and surf angling is a way of life here. Galjoen, blacktail, and steenbras are the target species. The locals know the spots β and if you ask nicely, they'll show you.
π€ The People
Elandsbaai is a mixed community β fishing families, surfers who never left, artists, and the 9 Miles youth who are building something new. Everyone waves. Everyone knows everyone. That's the point.
Local Tips
- Bring a wetsuit β even in summer, the Atlantic is cold (14β18Β°C)
- Cash is useful β not all small shops take cards
- Respect the locals β the point break has an etiquette. Watch for a while before paddling out
- Drive carefully β the R27 has no streetlights, and wildlife crosses at dusk
- Buy local β firewood, braai packs, and fresh fish from the village, not the Spar in Piketberg
