Surf Coaching

Thandi qualifies as Senior Surf Coach

March 2026

Thandi grew up watching surfers ride the point break at Elandsbaai. She wanted to be out there — but lessons were expensive, and there was no local program for young people. When the 9 Miles Project started, she was one of the first to sign up.

After eighteen months of training, Thandi completed her Level 2 surf instructor certification in Jeffrey's Bay — fully funded by the platform's commission fund. She returned to Elandsbaai on Monday to lead the 9 Miles afternoon sessions for visiting families.

"I used to watch from the rocks. Now I'm the one teaching. Every time a kid catches their first wave, I know this is working."

Village Maintenance

New roof for Elands Primary

February 2026

The "Stay Direct" initiative — funded entirely by platform commissions — reached its R50,000 goal for the school's roof restoration project. The old roof had been leaking for three years. Work began on a Friday, and by the following Monday, the classrooms were dry for the first time in years.

The work was done by local contractors and 9 Miles youth — providing both a repaired school and paid work for the community.

"When it rains now, the children don't have to move their desks. That's what this is about — small things that make a big difference."

Guest Experience

"We didn't just visit — we belonged"

January 2026

A family from Johannesburg booked a week in Elandsbaai through the platform. They expected a beach holiday. What they got was an experience — their kids learned to surf with Thandi, they had a braai pack delivered from a local farmer, and the property owner left a hand-written note with the best fishing spots.

"On Airbnb, you're a booking number. Here, you're a guest. The owner messaged us before we arrived, the surf coach knew our kids' names by day two, and when we left, we felt like we were leaving family. We're coming back in December — already booked."
